The process of moving /changing your domain management from one registrar to another is called domain transfer.
You may decide to transfer a domain name due to price, to retain full control of your domain or to benefit from free features offered by the new domain registrar.
Conditions for domain transfer
A domain name cannot be transferred to another domain registrar if it will expire within 7 days.
A domain name cannot be transferred if it is less than 60 days. If you register a domain name today, please give it 60 days before transferring.
Confirm that you have access to the administrative email address by checking the WHOIS of the domain. Once you start the transfer, the current registrar is going to email this address asking permission to move the domain. To check this go to http://www.domaintools.com and type your domain.com in the field labeled “Whois Lookup”. Find “Administrative Contact:” This is where your correct email address must be listed.
Make sure the domain is not locked at the current registrar. To check this go to http://www.domaintools.com and type your domain.com in the field labeled “Whois Lookup” and find “Status:” If the status says “locked,” you must get this changed before doing the transfer.
To get the above changed you must contact the domain registrar (where you bought the domain), and ask them to make the necessary changes. Some registrars let you make these changes yourself from within their control panel.
Get the authorization code – also called auth code, a transfer key, a transfer secret, an EPP code, EPP authentication code, or EPP authorization code
