Domain name registration in Kenya

The domain name system (DNS) translates Internet names into the IP numbers needed for transmission of information across the network. Domain names are the familiar and easy-to-remember names for Internet computers.

There are several factors you should consider before you register a domain name. Based on the argument that domain have advertising and marketing potential, the domain name should be memorable, short and should relate or be the name to the product or service you are selling.

Top-Level Domain (TLD) names can be generic or territory/Country specific. The generic top-level domains (gTLD) have three or more characters in their extensions.

Examples of Generic TLD extension are .com, .org, .net, .name.

Country code top-level domains (ccTLD) have a two-character territory code based on ISO-3166.

Examples of ccTLD extensions are .ke, .ug for Kenya and Uganda respectively.

To register Generic domains like hawlast.com is cheaper than the Country code top-level domains. For instance at hawlast.com register domains free for those people who are hosting their websites with us. The disadvantage with generic domain names is that you may not get the name you desire, while there is an 80% chance of getting a similar or better name at the .KE name.

Country code top-level domains ( ccTLD) in Kenya we have the extension .ke. For example

  • .co.ke – for Companies

  • .or.ke – for Not-for-Profit-Making Organizations or NGO’s

  • .ne.ke – for Network Devices

  • .go.ke – for Government Entities. Requires Supporting Documents

  • .ac.ke – for Institutions of Higher Educations. Requires Supporting Documents

  • .sc.ke – for Lower and Middle Institutes of Learning. Requires Supporting Documents

ccTLD have an advantage over ccTLD when geo-targeting for instance the Kneyan audience. To register a .ke domain you may need Ksh 3,000 per year which is way too expense than the gTLD. Though expect low pricesĀ  in the near future.
